Short drive up the coast today to the Pelješac peninsula. Campsite required for Guy to have a rest from driving and of course, more washing!

Just where the peninsula joins the mainland are the two towns of Ston and Mali Ston. The former has town walls which stretch steeply up a hillside and all the way over to Mali Ston, 3km away. They were built in the fourteenth century in order to protect the salt flats down below. It’s a climb and a half with steep steps up, across, down, then repeat. We did this before in 2018 but the views are so good from the top, we thought we’d tackle it again. Handrail all round – Thank God! I think we should have put it on Strava and then try it again in another four years!

After lunch we drove further up the Pelješac, stopping at the weird monument to the fallen of WW2. Still don’t understand why it has holes in it and bits chiselled out but it does have a great view out over the mountains.

Managed to drive past the Dingač wine cellars in Potomje and got to Camp Lavanda near Orebic mid afternoon.

Last time here, they’d only just managed to put out a huge wildfire that destroyed great swathes of the countryside around. You can still see evidence of it but at least a lot of the greenery has grown back.

A thunderstorm is forecast ( because we’ve done washing 🙄) and it feels cool to us, but sort of sticky humid at the same time. Nothing outside this time – we’ll see what happens…
