Yep – we took the easy option and went up on the train. We didn’t get a lot of sleep as the wind was howling round us, rocking the motorhome as if we were a ship on the high seas. At 1am, Guy decided to move the van so that we were next to a wall and more sheltered – it worked.
Very cold this morning – about 4 degrees with a raw wind. A rude awakening with a workman knocking at the door saying we’d have to move as he needed to be where we were parked.
Some sunshine gave us hope that we might be able to see the amazing views (1/6th of Norway on a good day), and it seemed a better idea to get up to the top as quickly as possible before the weather changed again.
This railway inside the mountain…well, it was a right rickety old relic that rattled along through the tiny tunnel. Built in secret for the military by NATO, it ensured easy access to the listening station at the top. It ran flat to the core of the mountain then we got off to get on a different one which then ascended 1040 metres at an incredibly steep 40 degree angle. It felt like being on a fairground ride! We walked along a tunnel to the outside and a blast of cold air. We could see approximately 1/6th of nothing! 😂 Thick cloud all around. Treated ourselves to a waffle and coffee in the cafe as consolation prize.
Back down in the relative warmth, we drove on towards Oslo, stopping at Heddal stave church for lunch and a walk.
Now at Kongberg, parked by a lake on the outskirts as the town didn’t have any suitable spots for the night. The first boy racer has just put an appearance in, adding another donut to the gravel. 😬
