The plan was to go east on a scenic drive over the Rif mountains this morning, but torrential rain all night made us change our route. It was so misty over the hills, we wouldn’t have seen anything anyway.
We came south instead, and the weather picked up throughout the day. The drive has been hair-raising to say the least …I think some people really do fall asleep at the wheel during Ramadan!
Gangs of children pop up everywhere – even in the remotest areas. They all wave enthusiastically and try to flag you down. We wave back and carry on.
So many donkeys too. The majority of them were happily eating the lush green grass at the roadside but a few were completely laden down with baskets of stuff on each side then a man on top riding side saddle – poor things ..it’s nuts!
What with random flocks of sheep and goats it was all a bit chaotic.

The scenery has changed quite dramatically along the way from very lush green stuff in the north (think they’ve had a lot of much needed rain) to drier, but still colourful mountains with the occasional reservoir.

The road surface left a lot to be desired for a main road, especially the last bit, when we came in towards the city from the ring road through a rubbish strewn wasteland. It felt like we were in a jeep on a rutted mountain track. Needless to say all our clothes had jumped off the rails again 🤣

Landed at the only campsite in Fez, Camping Le Diamant Vert. At £10 per night with electricity and services, I’m sure it’ll be fine for us. The reception was very swish – they even take cards, but once you get down the ramp it’s a stick it where you like affair. The local taxi man pretends to work for the campsite and assures us we’ll need both a taxi and a guide tomorrow. A taxi maybe, a guide ‘non’ – we don’t mind getting lost and don’t want to walk with a group.
