After another noisy night in the city, we made our way out to the countryside to see some very eerie sculptures on the site of a Nazi Prison Camp. Such a striking place, set in the pine forest, we were met with an offset concrete construction, 100 metres long with an inscription that translated as ‘The earth moans beyond this gate.‘ The sculptures were huge and really moving, but the strangest thing was the heartbeat you can hear all around the place. It was provided by a hidden metronome in a marble plinth. I was glad when we found the source as it makes you think you’re going mad. The worst bit was all the stuffed toys on the site of the children’s barracks. Really pleased we went, but also glad to come away.
It’s been raining on and off, so we decided there’d be no point stopping early to do washing as we wouldn’t get or dry. Drove on to a tiny firefighting museum just on the border with Estonia. The three members of staff were beside themselves to have visitors…they almost dragged us in. We were shown round at warp speed by the one lady that spoke English…her bus was due at 4 o’clock and it was ten to! After we’d looked at the old antique fire engines, we saw uniforms and helmets hanging up and suddenly realised that two of these antiquities were still in use. It was the type of stuff Guy used 32 years ago when he first joined!
In to Estonia next, and found a very small campsite near the sea. The sun made a valiant attempt to come out and Guy fell asleep in his chair outside. It’s 10:40 pm here now …and still light! 😮
