A tiring driving day today. Quick Lidl stop first thing for fruit and vegetables, then through some quite hilly country in to Luxembourg. The diesel was definitely cheaper, but the ridiculous layout of some of the roads probably used up the difference 🙄It’s a good job I was watching as Guy picked up the hose to fill up as he neatly put unleaded in! Now that would have been a disaster.
Boring drive into Germany. We couldn’t find anything of interest along the route to go and see. It’s been a bit murky with quite a lot of rain at times but not much cooler.
Had our lunch by a swimming lake near Schengen where the free movement agreement was signed.
The best bit of the day was stopping to pick up water at the Völklinger Hütter – the world’s only fully preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation. Well, when I say fully preserved – I’ve never seen so much rusting metal in my whole life. The size of the works is incredible and I can’t think of a more depressing place to earn a living. Good that it’s now a UNESCO site though. We would have liked to have gone round it, but at €17 a pop, it would’ve eaten into our diesel money.
We carried on, eventually just looking for somewhere to stay the night. Now in the sleepy village of Hornbach, on a site for €9 per night with a few other ‘homies’. It’s all quite peaceful.
