Busy day today. We drove up to the basilica at Monte de Santa Luzia first thing, which overlooks Viana. The views were amazing and somehow made better by the mist hanging in the valleys. Then we set off for Valenca do Minho – our last stop in Portugal. Old walled town on a hill filled with tat shops! We could see Spain over the river, so we had a quick lunch, crossed over the bridge and it was bye bye Portugal. Lasting impressions of the country are Pasteis de nata (custard tarts), graffiti, stunning beaches, warm sunshine, piles of rubbish, grand castles, barking dogs, beggars, and….custard tarts 😁 Got the motorhome filled up with cheap diesel by the first friendly, smiley petrol attendant since we left Spain a month or so ago. Drove over a big bridge in Vigo, then on to Santiago de Compostela – the end of the pilgrim trail. We couldn’t park anywhere and ended up about a mile and a half away at a sports centre. Rufus was not impressed with his pilgrimage uphill to see the cathedral. It was bitterly cold out there and nearly dark when we reached the centre of the old town. Impressive buildings although part covered in scaffold and a big square. Not very busy considering it’s Friday night and we’d been told that’s when they swing the incense. Downhill all the way back but somehow we did the long way round….glad I bought my gloves!
