Had a slow start this morning as we were watching our neighbours unload canoes from their van. We could not believe they were going in that river – it was like Holme Pierrepont slalom course on speed. They seemed to know what they were doing though, and were happy for Guy to take some photos, so we hung around to watch the action. Think Guy was thinking his ‘swift water rescue’ course might come in handy – then he noticed that the guy who was also called Guy had a badge on saying the same thing!
Set off down along Highway 55 thinking we’d be at the Lustrefjord by lunchtime …it took all day! We came past the Jotunheimen National Park seeming to be completely surrounded by jagged snow capped peaks and many glaciers.
Although it seems very wild and remote, there are loads of viewpoints. We stopped for lunch at a visitor centre, very modern and lovely inside. There was a circular walk across the fells to bring you a little bit closer to the glaciers. The wind was diabolical on the top…like sticking your head out of the chalet in the storm of 1987! 😂
Carried on in the afternoon. The road got very windy and steep as it brought us down towards the Lustrefjord. Stunning views, but we had to stop for coffee to let the brakes cool down as they were starting to smell very hot! Low gear for the rest of the way!
We were very happy when we got overtaken by a speeding motorhome, as he was pulled over a mile further on, to receive his very own,no doubt shocking, piece of Norwegian traffic control justice. 🤭😉😂
Found parking in the small town of Gaupne, although looking at the marks in the car park from drifting, we moved a little further away. It does seem to be the local sport in Norway, but we haven’t seen any in action yet – just wiggly lines and circles on the roads in the daftest places , even tunnels.
Had a walk up to an old church and then a new church as it was quite warm. Now it’s raining -again! 🙄
