The Moonbow

It was all happening up at the Callanish Standing Stones last night! Guy got a message from Ralph (the photographer from Arnold we met the other day) to say there was supposed to be Aurora activity happening right now in the north of the island. It was after eleven and we were both in bed. Needless to say the intrepid photographer got dressed and ran outside armed with camera and tripod. Think he just caught the end of it as clouds had come over and it was starting to rain. The moonbow was a bit unexpected though – never heard of such things but seems to be the only explanation for the arc of light over the van!

This morning, we’ve had a walk around all three standing stone sites – they were about a mile apart but we’d definitely been parked at the best one.

On the way back, we visited the Callanish Alpacas. Guy would probably have one in the van if left to his own devices. The owners also had numerous rescued sheep, ducks, hens and chickens – busy life!

Bosta beach for lunch. Beautiful place and big bonus – the sun appeared for a few minutes ☀️😊There was a tide bell installed here that creates a constantly varied musical pattern but unfortunately the tide was out when we were there.

Next we tried to get to Gallan Head. Some hair raising roads along the way. We saw a very derelict house with a motorhome outside – made us laugh. “The roof’s fallen in now but it’s ok ‘cos we’ve got the motorhome 😉”

After driving through some old army barracks that felt a bit creepy as they were half inhabited, we couldn’t find parking and decided to abandon the idea.

Back up the road to Kneep to try and find our pre booked campsite. Beautiful spot, no one around, phone number on door, no signal 🙄 Eventually Guy got through to Manager Finn, who thought he might have booked us in for Sunday. Settled in now for the night – even got the tele on 😬…turning into proper ‘homies 😂
