Another day where the route just went wrong and then even wrongerer!

Some low cloud hanging over Agüero this morning made it look even more unreal. We decided to call at Riglos to see the other Mallos on our way back to the main road, forgetting how much further it actually is. Somehow they just didn’t look as good.

We had a route across country that would take us directly to Bardenas, but gave up on it after a few miles – our first experience of a really bad Spanish road!

The only way round was the long way! South to Zaragoza and then back up. Although Zaragoza has a nice centre, its outskirts are ugly and so industrial you can almost taste the pollution.

It was nearly 3pm by the time we reached the semi-desert natural park of Bardenas Reales. This extraordinary landscape consists of sandstone, clay and chalk that has been eroded by water and wind creating weird and wonderful shapes. The area is made even more eerie by the fact that there’s a huge military installation on one of the rocks (Tracy Island!?).

We managed to get ourselves on a circular route on the gravel tracks, not realising just how massive the area is. By the time we got fed up with it, we were still 56 minutes away from civilisation. 🙄

Thankfully, there is a free motorhome aire right by the entrance. I think it’s the first time we’ve parked for the night overlooked by troglodyte caves!
