Thinking that these seaside resorts are all starting to look a bit same-ish and the weather was cold and windy, we decided to do quite a big detour inland. We set off for Alcala del Jucar and as it was a fair distance, I found a place to stop along the route that sounded quite interesting in the Rough Guide. This is the same Rough Guide that Guy instructed me to throw out of the window as we passed some bins on the way out!! 🤣 We walked for quite a way to see the old quarter in Xativa but really, there was very little to see.
Lunch in the carpark, then on with the drive. It was definitely worth it – we rounded the final bend and came face to face with this stunning town built into the rock.
Rufus had a walk and then we climbed up through the town to the castle at the top. It was quite windy up there and rather oddly there was a donkey wandering around. The bottom of the town was also really attractive with a river running through it and picnic areas. As we were cold, we decided to have a drink in a little cafe bar – the only one open. The barman told us the English were very educated but after some sorting out on google translate it turns out he meant polite. Apparently the Spanish don’t use please and thank you all the time like we do. Then, we had a real lucky strike. A lady came in with three friends and a birthday cake in a box. She asked the man for coffees etc. and he provided plates for her cake. She must have seen Guy’s ever hopeful eyes following her every move as she very kindly offered us a piece. We promptly wished her ‘Feliz Compleanos’ and got stuck in! 👌
