A very quiet and dark night down the forest track we stayed on last night…no elk or bear sightings though.
Following the Vildmarksvägen (Wilderness Road) this morning, we drove past some impressive waterfalls on our way up to the highest point which is the Stekenjokk.
On the advice of a Swedish man we kept bumping into, we visited the Fatmomakke Sami village. Negotiating 7km of gravel track, the driver found 35mph skimmed over the ruts far better than crawling at 10mph which was starting to shake all the screws loose again!
We were half expecting to find a bit of of tourist trap at the top, with a few tat shops etc, but it was really lovely. It had about 80 Kota, which were like wooden wigwams, a few cottages and a church. After the reformation, the people were expected to attend church several times a year, so this is where they met for hatches, matches and dispatches.
After lunch, we carried on up the road towards the Stekenjokk Plateau – snowdrifts can be as high as 7 metres here in the winter 🥶. It did feel a bit cold and bleak, but we passed another herd of reindeer which was fab to see.
Warmed up with a coffee at the top and Guy made some more flapjacks as he’s nearly eaten all the biscuits.
Had a walk up over the hills, the sun came out, and suddenly it didn’t feel cold at all. Could get windy up here tonight though – I don’t like the way that shed is held down with huge rocks!
