Not much sleep was had last night. An army of mosquitoes had somehow found their way in. Guy gave up and sat reading most of the night.
We followed the long road up to Norway, which steadily got more and more remote. The scenery changed to scrubland and swamps, then the minute we crossed the border, mountains appeared. There was a bit of a traffic jam at one point where re-surfacing was taking place but we seemed to be following the road down the first fjord in no time. To our surprise, the mountains still have some snow on them and it feels cold because it’s dull and cloudy.
We found a free parking place with good views and then set off for a walk after donning the winter gear!
Not much around that we could walk to from here. Found a church and then a very expensive food shop…we don’t need bread after all!
Eventually, we came across an old water tower with information boards around it. They told the story of how Russian prisoners of war had been marched here and put into forced labour camps. Apparently, all the bodies they’d found after the war had originally been given individual graves, but then later on, during the years of the Cold War, they dug them all up again and put them together in one grave. This was done because they thought Russian spies may come over pretending to be grieving relatives!
Here endeth today’s interesting story.
Hope the sun comes out tomorrow! 😁🌞
