Lake Balaton and Pecs

Had to wait ages to pay our campsite bill this morning – the reception woman had gone for a fag! Set off for Lake Balaton..a really big freshwater lake. It was surprisingly turquoise coloured and a few people were bathing in it …it didn’t seem to be very deep. There were a few almost deserted hotels around the edge. All a bit seventies concrete looking. We’d thought about going in a thermal lake further down but had a complete change of mind and decided to head for Pecs which is supposed to be really beautiful. Along the way, we spent the last of our Forints in Tesco (Yes – Tesco!!)then bumped our way along small roads for what seemed like hours. There really was nothing but flat fields for miles. Pecs was a lovely town when we finally got there. Fairly low key with lots of nice buildings, flowers and pavement cafes. We found a parking spot near a park but again changed our minds. A few dodgy looking characters around and just down the road they were setting up the big top for the ‘circus of horrors’! On a campsite again now, with gates closed and locked at 8pm – feels a lot safer.
