It’s big!

Poured with rain all night and most of the morning. We decided to drive into Gibraltar and fill up with diesel first. Not surprisingly, Morrisons didn’t have any of their super cheap stuff so we had to go elsewhere, although £1.38 is still a bargain these days!

Needed to give the battery a bit of a charge, so we decided to head for Malaga. We’ve always driven straight past it on the motorway before as it looks such a massive, intimidating, urban sprawl.

Got secure motorhome parking on the far side at La Cala. This little area is completely rammed with motorhomes and with a ‘full’ sign on the gate, we were lucky to get a space. The two panicked ladies in charge were trying to give everyone a tour of the site and full background info on Malaga, plus passport check etc – therefore taking twenty minutes to check each person in! 🙄

We got the bus into the city centre, which only took about twenty minutes. Fortunately the rain had stopped and the sun was trying it’s best.

Had a look at the cathedral first, then headed towards the Alcazaba. Couldn’t sort out how to get in, so ended up following a steep uphill path until we reached the entrance to the Gibralfaro castle. The path was under water after all the heavy rain so people were tiptoeing around the edge of a wall to try and reach the ticket office. Luckily we had put walking boots on so waded straight through. We were told it was too late in the day to do both castle and Alcazaba, but could buy a 48 hour ticket covering both. So confusing, because once we’d looked around the castle we came back down, found the entrance and went in to the Alcazaba. 🙄

Walking around the battlements of the castle, you could see the whole of the city and the mountains beyond – it’s massive!

The Alcazaba was probably the best bit – kind of like a mini Alhambra. All moorish archways, marble and mosaics, interspersed with little formal gardens and water features.

The town itself was quite nice, from the bit we saw anyway. A lovely main street of shops with narrow roads off it filled with restaurants and tapas bars and oops, we did it again! Sat down for a drink and then consumed all the deep fried tapas. It’s never intentional..it just kind of happens 😬Spanish food 1 – Willpower 0.
