Friendly Spanish Ibex

Well, at 8:30 this morning the sky had a very funny colour about it. Raining again, and when we opened the blinds, all the windows were filthy and the sky was orange. Sand was coming down with the rain. Guy washed some of it off when we filled with water, but it was covered again in about five minutes.

Thinking we’d escape the sand, we drove inland into the mountains towards Antequera. Up some twisty, turny, mountain roads, landing in the natural park of El Torcal. A few weird rock formations along the way, but nothing compared to what we saw later.

It was 8 degrees, raining sand still and blowing a gale, so we had to wait till late afternoon before venturing out.

What a spectacular place this must be on a sunny day – it’s a high plateau of sculptured, glaciated limestone. Such weird shapes and formations.

It took us forever to do the ‘easy’ path round, mostly because half of it was under water – well, sand-mud. The rocks were really slippery too, so much to Guy’s disgust I had to resort to doing my crab impressions or sliding down on my bum 🙄

The best bit of today though, was coming across five Spanish Ibex. They were so beautiful, and almost friendly. They must be completely used to seeing people up there.

By the time we got back to the van, we were completely covered in sand again – had to do a full change of clothes and the camera was in a right mess.

Still raining now – hoping for some of the cleaner stuff to come down overnight.

  1. So weird isn’t it? I think it does happen from time to time. Guys parent’s sometimes get it in the Gers region. I’ve just read that this has been one of the worst though. Mud everywhere! 😂
