Another rude awakening in the early hours this morning. Thought they might be putting market stalls up around us ( That’s happened before!🤣) but I think all the stuff from the bike race was being bought back to the car park we were in. Metal fencing, spare bins and portaloos can be very noisy at 4am!

We decided to break up the drive back across to Italy’s west coast, so landed here in Modena of balsamic vinegar fame.

It was a 5km walk into the centre which seemed to take forever. Most of it walking along the equivalent of Alfreton Road on the way into town. Bit scruffy on the outskirts but the centre is definitely a little upmarket. There are colourful porticoes running the length of many of the streets, a big square and UNESCO Duomo. We were the only people in shorts – autumn has definitely come to these parts and I don’t know why I’m still in denial. 🙄

Thought we’d get the bus home as both of us were hobbling a bit with our dodgy backs. Really unsure if we were waiting in the right place, but eventually it turned up. We duly validated our tickets on board, having purchased them at the tobacconists – I almost feel like a professional public transport user now!
