See man diving through waves!

Didn’t look very promising this morning. It had rained in through one of the roof vents and the washing wasn’t any drier. The fan had also a topped working as there had been a power cut.

Rain and storms forecast for the day, so we left the campsite not really knowing what to do with ourselves. Drove south down the east coast of the island and parked up on the beach at Vasiliki Bay. Nice little resort; we had a walk around as the weather seemed to be clearing up – still nice and warm despite the rain.

After lunch we drove right to the lighthouse at the bottom of the island – Cape Lipsó..I think! Brilliant views towards Kefalonia for most of the way.

Sun almost out by 2pm so we made our way along a shelf like road towards Pórto Katsiki, one of the few cove beaches on the island that we can get to in the motorhome.

This place is unbelievable! The sea is the bluest I have ever seen, with a white sand and pebble beach backed by huge pale cliffs. We parked above it and the parking man says it’s €20 if we stay overnight but we need to be gone by 9am. ā€œCan we make it 10? ā€œsays Guy, meaning ten in the morning. ā€œOk, I’ll do it for 15ā€ replies the man. šŸ˜‚Got five quid off without even meaning to!

Down to the beach we didn’t think we’d be able to see today. We sit down to watch the crazy waves, some of the biggest I’ve seen. The water looks so beautiful but I ain’t going in there – I’ll never get out! The sea seemed to drop away sharply and just swallow people up. There was a lull after a while and after seeing a few women go in, Guy thought he must have a go! šŸ™„He came out pretty quickly, shaken but not stirred.

We sat back almost against the cliff, well behind the marker line for where the water came to. Then suddenly, there’s a freak wave.

It came right up the beach and swallowed us all. I was shell shocked, everything was gone! My bag, containing phone, shoes, paraillas. Guy had luckily, reacted quickly and picked up the rucksack containing camera equipment- it was still wet but saved.

A kind chap managed to get my bag out of the sea and unbelievably my phone was still in it and still works. I found one trainer and Guy picked up the other further down the beach. I watched as he asked other people if it belonged to them, then threw it back towards the base of the cliff!? He didn’t think it was mine for some reason – too big! How rude!

Anyway, lucky escape there, lessons have been learnt, and I’ve ordered an urgent review and a public enquiry.
