We’ve reached the Dordogne region today – seems to have taken most of the day somehow. It was very grey and drizzling with rain along the way. Had a lunch stop in Brive by the river, but didn’t get out of the van as we didn’t want another load of clothes to dry off! Saw a big bird on the way out, so we stopped for Guy to stalk it with his big lens. Of course it got camera shy and flew off. Not sure what it is – any ideas Mr Simpson?

When we reached Sarlat, I have to confess to being a little bit disappointed. I kind of thought it would be in a more mountainous setting and it’s quite the urban sprawl on the outskirts. It is beautiful however, with its honey coloured stone houses and shops and restaurants selling all things gastronomic. Strange thing was, there was hardly a soul around; we kept bumping into the same six people wandering aimlessly like ourselves. It must be that the majority of houses here are second homes and the owners are currently in their first ones.

A shopkeeper sprang out of a doorway and offered us a taste of his white truffle pâté – think he’d had a very quiet day. Now back at base in a car park just above the town …”it’s oh so quiet shhh shhh”.
