After a quiet night by the river, we set off through Basel towards Lucerne. We decided to top up with diesel before leaving Germany as we thought it would probably be more expensive in Switzerland. Next, we had to get a vignette to drive on the motorways – about £35, but lasts all year (if you can afford to stay!). Called at a service station for a bit of currency then. A bit surprised as people were in and out of the shops with no masks. Seems so strange to us already, but it’s like the virus hasn’t been here at all. They’ve certainly done quite well compared to a lot of other countries and although there are a few signs around, everything feels weirdly normal!

Parked for a few hours in Lucerne, with a view to seeing the famous wooden bridge and buying a much needed tin opener! What a beautiful place, very clean and today, also very hot! People were queueing up for pleasure cruises without any kind of social distancing. In fact it was just us two giving everyone a wide berth.

The wooden bridges were lovely, but we didn’t go on them as there were too many people. The funniest thing was seeing people put their clothes in dry bags and queue to get in the water with woggles, life jackets, rubber rings etc. The current was so strong and fast, it whisked them away in seconds – looked like great fun! Most of the shops were closed and the only available tin openers were unfortunately attached to Swiss army knives 🙄.

Drove out of town for a few miles and parked near the lake – both of us melting in the heat. Walked down to try and find some shade at the marina. Saw some deer along the way. Lots of people jumping in the water – Guy tempted to treat them all to a viewing of his new boxer shorts but managed to restrain himself!
