A late start this morning. Rufus had a little wander down to the water for a sip of Rhein, then we set off following the river south. Guy mentioned in passing that there was a bike race close by on Sunday …well ‘quelle surprise’!!!😂
We stopped in Rhens for lunch after a pit stop at Lidl. Fresh figs – dirt cheap, didn’t expect that in Germany. Trouble is, we forgot to get coffee in France and don’t recognise any of the makes here. It’s crucial we find decent coffee ☕️ in the next couple of days or bad moods will ensue. I got to do driving …only stalled once (I’m new!) until we reached Oberwesel. Quite an interesting little walled town with watchtowers and pretty half timbered houses. Guy went up one of the towers but only an ex-fireman would climb those steps – just a ladder really! Turned slightly inland up a heart in mouth, tyres burning steep slope to get to our overnight free parking. No obligation to eat in the restaurant but the chap was so good about the parking, we thought we should. Two Wiener schnitzel later we regretted that decision. Think very dry pork in breadcrumbs with chips followed by dried out plum tart with a waitress clattering round setting up breakfast tables next to you! 🙄 Quite cheap but could’ve had much better in the motorhome – live and learn. Our neighbour in a tiny camper van told us he has four dogs in there. ‘How on earth?’ I said. ‘Come and see’ he says, proudly. Poor things are all bigger than Rufus and kept in crates. They obviously love them, take them out for walks etc but God – four dogs and two people in a camper van? Nuts 🥜
