Set off to walk into Vannes this morning alongside a busy road. The sun was shining but there was a really cool breeze, so I was glad I brought the cardigan that Guy said I wouldn’t need!

What a beautiful town! We came in past a marina through an old town gate, too busy but traffic free streets filled with really nice shops and a market with brilliant produce. We nearly missed the beautiful gardens on the outside of the ramparts but spotted them just as we were about to head back.

It got hot on the walk home but glad we did it as it’s ages since we’ve done any distance.

Quick lunch then off to Nantes with the hope of seeing the ‘Grand Éléphant’.

Parked in a motorhome aire after sitting patiently behind four vans while a couple worked out how to get the barrier up. Got the tram into the city and then crossed a bridge onto the island to see the ‘Machines de l’ille’.

What a top class attraction this place is! We just wanted to see the mechanical walking elephant but the ticket system was so complicated, we inadvertently paid to see everything….the elephant was free! 🙄

I can’t even begin to describe these wooden, mechanical, articulated machines but they are truly amazing. Children were encouraged to help with the demonstrations and I could see that Guy was trying to make himself small!

Outside, the elephant paraded down the street, trumpeting and blasting mist and water at the kids. It even did a wee at one point. People had paid to ride on it, but we decided that if you were on it you wouldn’t be able to see it!

A hot and packed tram has bought us back to base but we daren’t sit outside as all the reviews say that the mosquitoes even bite through your clothes here!
